IC Information:
Name: Fili son of Dis, sister-son of Thorin Oakenshield (pre-incarnation), Filbert Phineasson Darens his re-incarnated name (He refuses to answer to Filbert and goes by Fil).
Canon and medium: The Hobbit (film-trilogy), and using the books to fill in the blanks.
Age: 82 years old (young dwarf, pretty much a teenager, not even over the age of majority for dwarves)/ 21 years old in this new life
Preincarnation Species: Dwarf
Preincarnation Appearance: Image
Any differences: He’s completely human now, with a human’s body limitations, rather than a dwarf. Fili’s also taller and lankier with a total height of 5’8”. He has no beard, just a bit of stubble, and would never think to braid it in this life but he did grow out his hair to just a bit past shoulder length, which he usually kept tied back with a leather thong.
Preincarnated History: Wiki Link fo Fili, Plot of the first Movie, Plot of the second movie. plot of the book. (note: I merged movie and book canon for the synopsis below)
Fili’s great-grandfather was Thror, King of the kingdom of Erebor, said to have been the mightiest kingdom of dwarves at that time. King Thror amassed a great treasure of gold and jewels, among them a gem they called the Arkenstone, which was then held up as the symbol of the right to rule the dwarves. Unfortunately, the treasure attracts the attention of the dragon Smaug, who attacks Dale, a neighbouring city and destroys it before taking over Erebor itself, driving its inhabitants into exile.
Fili wasn’t born until years later (89 years after Smaug took the Lonely Mountain) and his brother Kili 5 years after him. The dwarves for Erebor during those years and for most of Fili’s life wandered around the cities and towns of men for work, and eventually settled into the Blue Mountains. Fili’s mother was Dis, Thorin’s younger sister (and the current king since Fili’s grandfather Thrain was missing/presumed dead and Thror was dead) and his father was never named. Since Thorin never had any children of his own, Fili was probably Thorin’s heir and groomed as the next King and educated as such and given a prince’s responsibilities. While he and his brother were still considered young dwarves (barely out of their teenage years), they were deemed old enough to help earn money to support their family and people, so Fili and Kili traveled around together finding work as blacksmiths and leathersmiths. They grew up hearing tales of the old Kingdom of Erebor and the mountain from their Uncle and elders and hoped one day they would be able to see it for themselves.
Then due to a chance meeting between Gandalf and Thorin , the Company was formed with 12 dwarves to take back their homeland. At Gandalf’s insistence, a hobbit burglar (or so they believed) called Bilbo Baggins was invited too. At first reluctant, Bilbo eventually joins them in their journey.
What follows is one big adventure where they were chased by orcs and wargs that were out to kill their entire family, encountered thunder giants, captured by goblins, rode on giant eagles, met a shapeshifter who can change into a bear, were captured by spiders who wanted to eat them, followed by elves who imprisoned them in the cellars for refusing to talk about their purpose in the woods, rode downstream a river in barrels, met the descendant of the Lord of Dale (and consequently the one who killed the dragon in the end), were unsuccessful in killing the dragon Smaug that had taken over their homeland (they tried drowning Smaug in gold which only made it madder), then participated in a battle with five armies against orcs and goblins. It was in this battle that Fili was killed alongside his brother Kili and uncle Thorin.
Reincarnated History: Filbert was the child of mixed heritages. His mother Eydis was of Icelandic descent, the youngest of four children while his father Phineas was an American, the middle child of three. Her parents immigrated to America before she was born, but she spent many happy summers as a child in Iceland. His parents met while Eydis was in university studying interior design, they fell in love and got married. They had four children, with the elder three being girls and Filbert was born 10 years after they married. Both of his parents have a large extended family in which they tried to keep in touch with as much as possible with visits, phone calls and emails. Her Icelandic heritage was important to Eydis, so all her children got a smattering of schooling in Icelandic culture and language and their names also followed Icelandic naming traditions. Filbert blamed this tradition (and suspected his father was drunk or high that night he was born) when he was given his name, Filbert Phineasson. He refused to answer to that name and goes by Fil instead as the name caused him no end of trouble when he was a child as it invited teasing and bullying for being ‘different’.
The youngest of four children and the only boy, he was somewhat coddled and fussed over by his older sisters and mother. He was a friendly and easy-going child by nature, so despite his unfortunate name he did have some friends to whom he was very loyal to and still stayed in contact even now that they've grown up and moved apart. Fil worked hard at school and was able to get into a good university on scholarship, having decided to pursue a career as an architect, with an eye on eventually joining his father’s architectural firm. At 21, he’s finished university with an bachelor’s degree and has found an internship with an architectural firm in Locke. And it just so happens that his uncle Thorir lives in Locke and has a free guestroom for the taking. Filbert’s reluctant, mostly because he wanted to break free from family for a while but was convinced after a talk that touched on the following points: look at how expensive it is to live alone these days, you’ll be stuck in a cramped basement room while I have a spacious guestroom all ready for you and don’t you like your family any more?
First Echo: Fil’s first echo happened shortly after he moved to Locke. He was browsing through a arts and crafts fair when he came upon Killian’s stall. Fil bought a matching necklace and bracelet from Killian and exchanged business cards with him. On Killian’s business card there was a set of dwarvish runes that said “Thank You.” That triggered Fil’s first echo, the ability to understand Khuzdul. The ability is imperfect as he can only read and write Khuzdul, but not understand the spoken version of it.
At the same time he got the glowing numbers in his head that eventually led to the network.
Preincarnation Personality:
Fili was a young dwarf, pretty much a teenager, the second youngest of the Company and it showed. He didn’t have as much experience (in life or in battle) as the other dwarves of the Company or even Bilbo have but at the same time he exuded a confidence in his own skills that was not entirely undeserved. He and his brother grew up in the Blue Mountains, but probably had never travelled very far from it and young dwarves are prone to boasting about their own skills to raise their standing among peers. He was his Uncle’s heir and Fili was always aware of the extra layer of responsibility that is on him. However, it doesn’t mean that he doesn’t slip occasionally. There was always the willingness for mischief that can’t be repressed entirely in Fili. He’s boasted about the Company’s fighting prowess and even quicker to help himself to Bilbo’s ale and food while in Bag End, and joining in the Company’s antics regarding Bilbo’s crockery. While he doesn’t outright join Kili in teasing Bilbo about orcs, he doesn’t stop his brother either.
Nothing was more important for Fili than his younger by a handful of years brother Kili. They have never been separated for more than a day since Kili was born. One of the earliest responsibilities given to him was: watch over your brother! They often egg each other on when it comes to pranks or teasing, though he is always slightly more restrained in them then his brother. Like most young dwarves, their relationship was punctuated by teasing, snarking and fistfights. There has been several instances when he thought Kili was dead and injured and his normally easygoing composure slips. Then in Laketown he outright disobeyed his Uncle who wanted him to go along with the rest of the Company to the Lonely Mountain and instead stayed behind to be with his brother.
He has a close relationship to his Uncle Thorin as well. It’s implied his father died early in their childhood and as the children of his sister Thorin would have a big hand in raising them. (The sister-son relationship was very important to Tolkien.) Additionally, Fili is his heir, the next in line for the throne of Ererbor should Thorin die and so Thorin has always been extra hard on Fili and laid extra responsibilities on him that Kili does not have. Other than his brother, Thorin comes next to his loyalty, both as his close kin and as his kin. There is a lot of respect from Fili towards Thorin, and love as well, enough that both brothers died defending their Uncle in the last battle with swords and their own bodies.
All dwarves love precious metals and jewels and Fili was no different. The gold-lust sickness has always hit his family line the hardest (both Thror and Thorin succumbed to it) but probably due to his youth he was unaffected.
Any differences:
- Fili's much more carefree and relaxed; he’s NOT the heir to a kingdom-in-exile of dwarves and not being groomed to be his Uncle’s heir. While his family would be happy if he inherited his father’s position in the architectural firm Fili's been explicitly told they’d be happy for him even if he quit school to join the circus, so long as he’s sure it’s what HE wants.
- While he was the eldest son and heir the last time around, in this life FIli's the youngest child and only boy. He’s used to being coddled and fussed over by his family, even as he tells them he’s grown up now and can take care of himself! Part of the reason for moving to Locke is to get away from their well-meaning fuss
- As a young dwarf Fili was exuberant, even a little wild and exuded confidence. Being laughed at and bullied so often as a child due to his name has changed that; Fili's calmer and while he’s as loyal as he was in his old life to his friends and family he’s more cautious around strangers and not as quick to trust as before. While he knows himself and his place in the world, he doesn't go around deliberating broadcasting it.
Abilities:
- very good eyesight, and especially mentioned in the books for having the best eyesight among the Company second to his brother but especially for dark/underground places. (Since dwarves live mostly underground and in mountains and many are miners); he and Kili are often asked to scout for the Company
- has experience hunting, since this is another task he does for the Company during the quest and along with it basic outdoor survival skills. Also related is horse riding.
- very good craftsmen with metals/jewels/weapons (he’s young but most dwarves would have an affinity for crafting beyond what humans could do)
- better physical endurance and stronger than humans, overall just sturdier built with heavier bones and muscles
- knowledge of Dwarvish runes/Kuzdul (the secret language of the elves)
- the use of many different types of weapons such as daggers, hunting knives, throwing axes, a war hammer, twin swords (dual-wield); the elves of Mirkwood took all of the above from him and kept FINDING MORE when they were locked up in the cells
- fiddle playing (both he and his brother were fiddle players in the book), juggling crockery, singing
- knowledge of dwarven history, diplomacy and law (Thorin had no children and heirs of his own, Fili as the eldest of his sister’s children was his heir and given more responsibilities and lessons because of this)
- longer lifespan than humans; a typical dwarf lives for around 250-300 years

Okay, this is new. I thought I knew most of major blogging, forums, social network stuff online but just typing a random set of numbers could get me into this one? And one that has video chat option to it as well! I’m not turning it on just yet though...just want to get the hang of things first.
Anyway, I've got just a quick question regarding online safety...who or what company’s maintaining this and are they likely to try to extort money or other info from me later? The descriptor attached to this forum wasn't all that forthright and reassuring. I don’t mind taking a few risks but I don’t want it affecting my family though!
Any Questions? Nope, I’m good.
